Secret Garden

During my morning walk in Sister Bay, I passed this old-fashioned patriotic garden with pretty flowers of all varieties and colors, along with a few pots of tomatoes, lettuce, and other veggies as well!

Tomatoes!

There are quite a variety of tomatoes at the Madison farmer's market.  My favorite are the dark pink "Brandywine" heirlooms.  Great on a BLT!

Farmer's Market Veggies

The selection is always overwhelming at the Saturday morning farmer's market around Capitol Square in Madison, Wisconsin. This vendor had a variety of gorgeous looking produce on his tables.

On your honor

This untended pumpkin wagon is located on the edge of an old farmstead right, next to the railroad tracks on Duplainville Road. The little markers indicate different prices for each sized pumpkin - small, medium or large.

Pumpkins & More

One of the many farm pumpkin stands that dot Wisconsin during the fall months was offering free kittens along with the produce! I almost took this adorable gray and white kitten named Zoey home with me. Not sure how Phoebe and Nik would have felt about that... :-)

The stand is over on Silver Spring Road. By "more" they mean squash, gourds, Indian corn, straw bales, decorative corn stalks, and a small variety of home-made canned goods and crafts. It's also a popular place for local grade school kids to take a hay ride and wander the fields to "pick" their own pumpkins.

More of the Same

The fall roadside markets are in full force this season. Here is another display on Capital Drive. They're offering pumpkins, corn, gourds, squash, and apples for your autumn pleasure! Note the old fashioned tractor and wooden cut-out of a corn cob.

Squash Market

Our local upscale grocery market, Sendik's, has a nice display of locally grown pumpkins and squash set outside their store this fall. Note the very tiny crescent moon setting over their sign below? These pictures were taken after dark on my way home from work.

Fields of Gold

The many soybean fields in the area are now starting to turn a beautiful golden color. Often times you can catch turkeys and deer grazing through the area before harvest.

On Your Honor

One of the farms on Swan Road has a little market stand at the end of their driveway each year. First come the zucchini, a few cucumbers, some beets and green beans - and finally the sweet corn and tomatoes. We still have a little ways to go before the corn is ready (see the sign.)

It's always the best, very crisp, sweet and juicy - eaten the day it's picked. Now that's fresh!

The stand is unattended. Trusting Midwest souls that they are, the money bucket is left out to collect payment, "on your honor." And I don't think they would continue doing this year after year if there were any problems.
