Remember the Night

One of my new favorite Christmas movies is called "Remember the Night" starring Barbara Stanwyck and Fred MacMurray from 1940.  It was a largely overlooked film until Turner Classic Movies (TCM) introduced it into their holiday schedule a few years ago.  A feel-good relationship story with a few tears and a great historical peek into the past, it includes a lovely performance by Beulah Bondi (George Bailey's mother in "It's a Wonderful Life") and a whimsical turn by character actor Sterling Holloway. Stanwyck, as usual, plays a bad girl with a good heart like no one else.

I recently purchased the video from Amazon for my personal collection, and curled up with a cup of steaming hot coffee and piece of home-made Blueberry Crumble Pie to watch it.

Red Door at the Old School

Autumn brings back memories of walking to and from good ol' Harry Spence Elementary School in La Crosse, Wisconsin, back in the 1960's. Still looks the same, except they painted the main entrance doors red!

SkyWatch Friday: Sunset Over Lambeau

This view was taken from the ramp at Lambeau Field in Green Bay, Wisconsin while walking up to our seats at the Packers-Bears football game on September 13, 2012. (The Packers won, 23-10! Yay!)

Dinner Plates

These giant shelf mushrooms were growing on the base of a decaying tree up on the Ryan Road trails.

"...and there is your dagger!"

Sportscaster Wayne Larrivee, voice of the Green Bay Packers radio network, popularized the phrase “And there is your dagger!” — and uses it whenever the Packers make the defining play that puts the game away as a sure win. As Wayne says: we all stood up and cheered the “Daggers” through last season and during the Super Bowl — and I'm sure we'll have even more this year!

The phrase has become so popular in these parts that he even has a line of merchandise featuring it, with the Make-A-Wish Foundation® as a beneficiary. The shirt above was on sale at a vendor booth on the way into Lambeau Field in Green Bay right before the Packers-Bears game.

Lambeau Field

We were at the Packers-Bears game on Thursday night up in Green Bay.  This is one of the new giant HD scoreboards. There's one at each end of the field. (This one was at the far end from where we were seated; the clarity is fabulous.) The Pack won, 23-10!

Sunflowers

I added a few sunflowers from our garden to brighten up the small carnation bouquet from the grocery store. Happy September! :-)

Dancing with Toulouse

The lobby posters announcing the show "Posters of Paris" at the Milwaukee Art Museum are just as exciting as the vintage ones on display.

Window Wall

Above is the large glass wall separating the "Posters of Paris" exhibition from the rest of the Milwaukee Art Museum lobby. The posters included fabulous full size original lithographs by well known artists of the late 19th century, such as Toulouse Lautrec, Jules Cheret, Jean de Paleologue (also known as 'Pal'), and others. Cameras were not allowed into the exhibit, but photos were allowed in the lobby.

Milwaukee Architecture

This view is looking northwest from the outside of the Milwaukee Art Museum over Lincoln Memorial Drive.  Not sure exactly what that large white building is, but I think it may be one of the cities' older posh apartment buildings. In the foreground you can see a kiosk with advertisements for the current museum show, "Posters of Paris."  I will show a few more images over the next day or two from our little jaunt downtown.
