Red Door at the Old School

Autumn brings back memories of walking to and from good ol' Harry Spence Elementary School in La Crosse, Wisconsin, back in the 1960's. Still looks the same, except they painted the main entrance doors red!

Gothic Autumn

As you drive east on Cass Street in downtown La Crosse, toward the Mississippi River Bridge, you will pass this very old gothic mansion. The chill in the air and the changing color of the leaves lent an eerie feel to its presence on this early autumn afternoon. One can almost imagine Norman Bates peaking out from one of the upper windows!

First Day of Autumn

The state tree of Wisconsin is the Sugar Maple. They are usually the first to turn color in the fall and this year is no different. In recent years, some of these maples are subject to a blight which makes them turn a paler color and lose their leaves early. This photo shows an example of this - where instead of a bright orange-red, they are a washed out pinkish-gold with green veins. Still very pretty against the darker green background foliage. Note, however, that the leaf stems still display the bright red color.

August Theme Day: Night

The Japanese Maple by our front door has such arching, graceful branches. This "flash" shot really illuminates the pretty red & gold color of the leaves against the night-time sky.
