Landmark Cannon

This cannon, located in La Crosse's Riverside Park, was dedicated in July 1918 as a memorial to the USS Maine, which was destroyed in Havana Harbor in 1898 during the Spanish-American War.

As teenagers, we used to get a dozen kids to sit on the front edge of the cannon and it would rock downward, allowing all the rainwater and candy wrappers to slop out... we called it "burping the cannon!"  I wonder if that still works? ;-)

Church Upon the Rocks

Sorry for being a bit remiss in my posting of late, but I've been battling a doozy of a cold this past week, and quite busy with work and dog-sitting duties. (Harriet!) I really need to finish posting photos of our Arizona trip, so today I'm sharing a view of the Chapel of the Holy Cross in Sedona, AZ. Quite a stunning work of architecture (conceived by female architect Marguerite Bruswig Staude and built in 1956.) Below is the view from across the street.

The Clark House Museum

The Clark House Museum, located in the Village of Pewaukee, recalls one of Pewaukee's earliest settlers, Asa Clark. It is the original building with some obvious restorations. The local middle school is also named after him. Not sure why the Christmas wreath is still hanging (see entrance close-up below) - but it does add a needed splash of color.
